Public Health Sponsors Cultural Presentation

The Mille Lacs Band Public Health Department is honored to announce a free cultural presentation featuring Dr. Anton Treuer Wednesday, June 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grand Casino Mille Lacs Convention Center. All are welcome, and lunch will be provided.

Dr. Treuer will present information on Keeping Tobacco Sacred, the history of traditional tobacco, and preservation of the Ojibwe language. The event is sponsored by the Public Health Department’s Tribal Tobacco Prevention Grant.

Dr. Treuer is a Professor of Ojibwe at Bemidji State University and has worked with Ojibwe language immersion efforts in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ontario. Dr. Treuer is known for his volunteer work at Ojibwe ceremonies, where he helps in Minnesota and Wisconsin with ceremonial drums and helps to maintain religious traditions. He is acknowledged to be one of the youngest knowledgeable teachers and leaders of the ceremonies. Dr. Treuer has authored 14 books.
