ICWA Family Support Aide (2 positions)

SUMMARY:
The ICWA Family Support Aide provides in-home support services to children and families who are currently involved in the child protection system. Services are intended to promote reunification, increase stability, safety and prevent out of home placement.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of six (6) years’ experience in the Human Services or related field are required.
• Two-year degree and at least one year experience in the Human Services or related field is preferred.
• Knowledge and understanding of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) and the Minnesota Family Preservation Act.
• Knowledge and experience working with Native American communities, culture, customs and cultural law.
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn and train in interviewing, building rapport with families and observations skills.
• Knowledge and understanding of HIPAA and Data Privacy Act.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
• Strong time management skills.
• Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
• Must have a current valid driver’s license.
• Must be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Drivers Insurance policy.
• Must be able to pass a background check.

• A staff person with direct contact with or access to children in care must disclose the arrest, conviction, and applicant background information if that staff person:
(a) has a conviction of, has admitted to, has an adjudication of delinquency for, has been charged and is awaiting trial for, or a preponderance of the evidence indicates the person has committed:
1) a crime against a child;
2) an act of physical or sexual abuse;
3) neglect;
4) a felony;
5) the same or similar crimes as those in this subsection listed in the laws of another state or of the United States or of any Tribal law;
(b) has a conviction of, has admitted to, has an adjudication of delinquency for, has been charged and is awaiting trial for, or a preponderance of the evidence indicates the person has committed any misdemeanor offense under Federal, State, or Tribal law involving crimes of violence; sexual assault, molestation, exploitation, contact or prostitution; crimes against persons; or offenses committed against children. The Licensing Committee may evaluate the nature and time of a misdemeanor assault charge as well as other types of misdemeanor crimes not specified in this section to determine whether employment is appropriate.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide services in the homes of child protection clients, children in out-of-home placement, families who need specific support services.
• Participate in case plan development and implementation to carry out specific goal achievement of case plan with Family Services and or child protection plans.
• Identify and work with family needs, challenges and strengths.
• Communicate and work closely with the Mille Lacs band Social Worker assigned to the case by relaying critical information and coordinating duties.
• Assist children and families transitioning their children back into the homes form various placements such as foster care or correction placements.
• Provide transportation to clients as needed.
• Assess the need for and obtain resources for the families.
• Attend review meetings or related case support meetings as necessary.
• Maintain files in conjunction with the social workers on the case.
• Comply with Band and Child Protection Statutes.
• Contact with clients in the community and office.
• Maintain case progress notes.
• Maintain other records, logs, etc. and provide to management.
• Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Nature of work is such that incumbent may experience periods of moderate to high stress levels while dealing with children, family members, and family services staff.
• Wok varies from outside activities to indoors in a controlled climate area.
• Moderate threat of personal danger or risk.
• Hours will vary and based off clients’ needs. Hours range from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. with occasional work on holidays and weekends.
• Will involve working with many different people who are often distressed in some way.
• Local travel is required; travel outside the state is very limited.
