Family Nurse Practitioner (2 Positions)

SUMMARY:
The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) is responsible for providing services, according to Health and Human Services policies and processes, to patients at the Ne-Ia-Shing, East Lake and Aazhoomog clinics for the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. The FNP provides health care including physical exam, ordering of tests, test interpretation, patient education, prescribing within the scope of the FNP standards, diagnosing and referrals. The FNP shall also participate at the direction of the Health Director or Medical Director in various committees and/or workgroups such as: in infection control, quality assurance and diabetes programs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Degree as Nurse Practitioner from an accredited school and is licensed with the State of Minnesota Board of Nursing as Advanced Practice Nursing (APN)
• Possess and maintains current FNP certification with American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and/or American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
• Experience with and knowledge of universal precautions and other accepted infection control practices.
• Experience with and knowledge of accepted quality assurance policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of current medical/nursing protocols and willingness to keep all necessary protocols up-to-date.
• Knowledge of and willingness to comply with all aspects of patient rights and confidentiality.
• Able to work and communicate effectively with patients, families, providers and co-workers.
• Knowledge of the Privacy Act of 2014 and ability to maintain strict confidentiality of patient, Clinic and Band information.
• Experience with and understanding of Native American culture and ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
• Able to accept direction and constructive feedback
• Able to produce timely and accurate work with a high degree of efficiency.
• Compliance with the Mille Lacs Band Drug and Alcohol Policy.
• Mille Lacs Band/Native American preference
• Must have a current valid driver’s license.
• Must be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Drivers Insurance policy.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
• Successfully pass a background check.
• Successfully complete credentialing process and insurance credentialing program.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Work and communicate effectively with patients, families, providers and co-workers.
• Reviews all lab and radiology reports when they come in and assure appropriate follow up.
• Assures, with assistance from the Medical Director, the development and maintenance of protocols for specific acute and chronic diseases.
• Assists the Health Director in the development and ongoing review of written policies, procedures and guidelines for a comprehensive health care program.
• Assists with the development and implementation of an on-going, comprehensive record review as part of the total QA/QI program.
• Advise others of the need to reorder equipment, supplies, medications, etc.
CLINICAL SERVICES
• Teaches patients and family members to maintain and improve their health status.
• Evaluates the total health care needs of patients and develops plan of care to meet those needs.
• Provide family planning counseling, information and contraceptive materials with protocols.
• Provide prenatal surveillance through physical examination, measurements and lab tests.
• Provides postnatal surveillance.
• Provides referrals to appropriate community obstetrical services.
• Evaluates the nursing and medical needs of care delivery plans, recognizes the need for further assessment by a physician or other health professional.
• Works with in collaboration with other providers, Nursing staff and health services team
• Participates in occasional community health education.
• Attend meetings as required by the Health Director or Medical Director.
• Participate on committees as requested.
• Other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Nature of work is such that the incumbent experiences periods of moderate to high stress levels while dealing with patients and family member issues.
• Work is exclusively in doors in a controlled climate area.
• Moderate threat of personal danger or risk, as incumbent is exposed to chemicals, and infectious agents, and must use special precautions to avoid injury or harm.
• Full-time position typically works Monday-Friday with 8-10 hour days, possibly some extra hours. May involve some evening and occasionally an “on call” system covering emergency situations. Part-time position works 1-2 days per week and occasionally an “on call” system covering emergency situations.
• Local and non-local travel may be required.
